🍤 Ingredients You’ll Need
Crafting this vibrant Bang Bang Shrimp with Zoodles requires a few simple, fresh ingredients. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll need to create this delicious, healthy meal:
For the Shrimp & Zoodles:
- **Butter or Ghee:** Provides a rich flavor for sautéing the shrimp. You can also opt for healthier fats like avocado oil or olive oil for a dairy-free option.
- **Garlic Cloves (minced):** Fresh garlic infuses the shrimp with an aromatic foundation, crucial for depth of flavor.
- **Raw Shrimp (peeled and deveined):** The star of our dish! Fresh or frozen (and thawed) shrimp work perfectly. Ensure they are peeled and deveined for ease of preparation.
- **Zucchini (spiralized):** The low-carb hero that replaces traditional pasta. If you’re new to making zucchini noodles, check out our guide on how to make zoodles for easy instructions.
- **Chili Flakes (to garnish):** Adds a touch of heat and visual appeal, allowing you to customize the spice level.
- **Chopped Parsley (to garnish):** Fresh parsley brings a bright, herbaceous note and a pop of color to the finished dish.
For the Creamy Bang Bang Sauce:
The secret to our lighter Bang Bang Shrimp lies in its incredible, creamy sauce. We’ve swapped out traditional mayonnaise for a healthier base without compromising on taste:
- **Plain Greek Yogurt:** This is the game-changer! Greek yogurt provides the creamy texture of the classic sauce while adding a boost of protein and significantly reducing fat and calories.
- **Hot Sauce:** A dash of your favorite hot sauce (like Sriracha) is essential for that signature spicy kick. Adjust to your heat preference.
- **Chili Paste (Thai chili sauce):** Adds a complex layer of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors that is fundamental to the authentic Bang Bang taste.
- **Honey:** A touch of natural sweetness from honey balances the heat and acidity in the sauce, creating a harmonious flavor profile.
- **Juice and Zest of 1 Lime:** Fresh lime juice brightens the entire sauce, adding a zesty tang, while the zest provides an extra aromatic lift.
Gathering these simple ingredients is the first step towards enjoying a truly remarkable and healthy meal!
🔪 How to Make Healthy Bang Bang Shrimp Zoodles
Making this healthier Bang Bang Shrimp is incredibly straightforward, perfect for any home cook. While we love serving it with zucchini noodles, feel free to adapt it to your preferences – whole-grain pasta, quinoa, or roasted vegetables would also make fantastic companions.
Preparing the Zucchini Noodles:
First, if you’re using zucchini noodles, it’s important to prepare them correctly to avoid a watery dish. Zucchini naturally contains a lot of water, which can be released to improve the texture of your “zoodles.”
- **Spiralize:** Begin by spiralizing your zucchini into noodle shapes.
- **Salt and Drain:** Place the spiralized zucchini in a colander in your sink or on a paper towel. Sprinkle a generous pinch of salt over them and gently toss. Allow them to sit for at least 10-15 minutes. This process helps draw out excess moisture.
- **Pat Dry:** Before adding them to the skillet, gently squeeze or pat the zucchini noodles dry with a paper towel to remove any remaining liquid. This step is crucial for achieving firm, non-soggy zoodles.
Cooking the Shrimp:
While your zoodles are draining, you can get started on the succulent shrimp.
- **Heat the Skillet:** In a large skillet, melt the butter or ghee over medium-high heat. If you’re using avocado or olive oil, add it to the hot skillet.
- **Sauté Garlic:** Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for about 1 minute until it becomes fragrant. Be careful not to burn it.
- **Cook Shrimp:** Add the raw, peeled, and deveined shrimp to the skillet. Season lightly with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for approximately 3-4 minutes, or until the shrimp turn pink and are cooked through. Shrimp cooks quickly, so avoid overcooking to keep them tender.
- **Set Aside:** Once cooked, transfer the shrimp to a large bowl and set aside.
Making and Combining the Bang Bang Sauce:
How to Make the Bang Bang Shrimp Sauce
The star of the show is this vibrant, creamy, and healthy Bang Bang sauce.
- Plain Greek Yogurt
- Hot Sauce (like Sriracha)
- Chili Paste (Thai chili sauce)
- Honey
- Juice and zest of 1 lime
In a small bowl, combine all the sauce ingredients: Greek yogurt, hot sauce, chili paste, honey, and fresh lime juice and zest. Whisk thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined and the sauce is smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust the spice or sweetness if needed.
Bringing It All Together:
Now it’s time to combine everything into a delicious, cohesive meal.
- **Add Zoodles to Skillet:** Return the skillet to medium heat (no need to add more oil unless it’s completely dry). Add the drained zucchini noodles and cook for 1-2 minutes, just enough to warm them through. You want them tender-crisp, not mushy.
- **Combine with Shrimp and Sauce:** Add the cooked shrimp back to the skillet with the zoodles. Pour the freshly made **Bang Bang Shrimp sauce** over the shrimp and zoodles.
- **Toss and Serve:** Toss everything gently for about 1-2 minutes, ensuring the shrimp and zoodles are evenly coated with the sauce.
- **Garnish:** Serve immediately. Garnish generously with fresh chopped parsley and a sprinkle of chili flakes for an extra kick and a beautiful presentation. Divide among plates or meal prep containers.

💭 Common Questions About Bang Bang Shrimp
Bang Bang Shrimp is a popular appetizer known for its incredibly addictive sweet and spicy flavor. Traditionally, it features crispy, fried shrimp generously coated in a creamy sauce. The sauce typically combines mayonnaise, **Thai sweet chili sauce or paste**, and a touch of hot sauce, such as Sriracha. It has gained widespread popularity in restaurants and has inspired countless homemade variations, including our healthier, pan-seared version.
The original Bang Bang sauce recipe typically calls for mayonnaise, a chili sauce (often Thai sweet chili sauce), Sriracha, and sometimes a touch of rice vinegar for tang. However, our healthier rendition cleverly substitutes mayonnaise with **plain Greek Yogurt**. This simple switch significantly reduces fat and calories while boosting protein, resulting in a sauce that is equally creamy, flavorful, and much more nutritious. We also use chili paste, hot sauce, honey, and fresh lime juice to achieve that perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and tangy.
Leftover Bang Bang Shrimp with Zoodles can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. It makes for excellent meal prep! For longer storage, you can freeze the shrimp (without the zoodles, as they can become too watery upon thawing) for up to 2 months. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave until warmed through.
Absolutely! Frozen raw shrimp works perfectly for this recipe. Just be sure to thaw it completely before cooking. You can do this by placing it in the refrigerator overnight or by running cold water over the shrimp in a colander for about 10-15 minutes until fully defrosted. Pat them dry thoroughly before cooking to ensure they sear nicely.

What to Eat with Bang Bang Shrimp Zoodles
Our **Bang Bang Shrimp Zoodles recipe** is designed to be a complete and nutritious meal on its own, with the zucchini noodles providing a fresh, low-carb vegetable component. - **Crisp Green Salads:** For an even lighter meal, serve your Bang Bang Shrimp over a bed of fresh greens. Try it with a zesty vinaigrette or a light creamy dressing. Our Brussels sprouts salad offers a delightful crunch and robust flavor.

- **Roasted Sweet Potatoes:** For a touch of natural sweetness and complex carbohydrates, roasted sweet potatoes make a fantastic side. Their earthiness beautifully balances the spicy-sweet shrimp. Our honey-roasted sweet potatoes would be a perfect match.
