My passion for oatmeal cookies drives me to constantly experiment with new flavors and ingredients. There’s something so rewarding about creating a delicious treat that typically doesn’t require an extensive list of ingredients. These particular Blueberry Oatmeal Tahini Cookies, crafted with ripe bananas, rich tahini, juicy blueberries, and a handful of other simple components, turned out exceptionally well. Their unique blend of flavors surprised even me! While I personally adore the distinctive taste of tahini, I’ve also found that swapping it for almond butter works beautifully, a preference my kids often share. It’s a testament to the versatility of this recipe, adapting easily to different palates while retaining its wholesome goodness.
Why You’ll Love These Blueberry Oatmeal Tahini Cookies
- Uniquely Delicious Flavor: The combination of nutty tahini, sweet blueberries, and the subtle tang of lemon zest creates an unexpected yet harmonious flavor profile that stands out from typical oatmeal cookies.
- Quick and Easy: With a prep time of just 10 minutes and a baking time of 10-12 minutes, these cookies are perfect for those moments when you need a quick homemade treat without a long wait.
- Wholesome Ingredients: Packed with oats, bananas, and fresh fruit, these cookies offer a healthier alternative to many traditional cookie recipes, making them a guilt-free indulgence.
- Pantry Friendly: Most of the ingredients are likely already in your kitchen, making these cookies an accessible recipe for any time.
- Versatile for Any Occasion: Enjoy them as a wholesome breakfast on the go, a satisfying afternoon snack, or a delightful light dessert after dinner.
The Magic of Tahini (and its Alternatives)
Tahini, a paste made from ground sesame seeds, is the star ingredient that sets these cookies apart. It imparts a wonderfully nutty, slightly savory, and subtly bitter flavor that beautifully balances the sweetness of the bananas and honey. Beyond its distinct taste, tahini is also a fantastic source of healthy fats, protein, and essential minerals, adding a nutritional boost to your cookies.
However, I understand that tahini isn’t for everyone. Its unique flavor can be an acquired taste, and some may prefer a different profile. The great news is that this recipe is incredibly adaptable! If tahini isn’t your preference, you can easily substitute it with other creamy nut butters. Almond butter or cashew butter are excellent choices, offering a similar texture and richness without the distinct sesame flavor. My own children, for example, often prefer the cookies made with almond butter, proving just how versatile and family-friendly this recipe can be.
Ingredients for Your Blueberry Oatmeal Tahini Cookies
Gathering your ingredients is the first step to creating these irresistible cookies. You’ll be pleased to find that the list consists of simple, wholesome items, many of which are likely already in your pantry. Full, precise measurements are conveniently detailed in the complete recipe card further down this page.

- Ripe Bananas: The riper the bananas, the sweeter and easier they are to mash, contributing natural sweetness and moisture to the cookies. Look for bananas with plenty of brown spots.
- Honey (or Maple Syrup): Acts as a natural sweetener. Both honey and maple syrup work perfectly, allowing you to choose based on your preference or dietary needs.
- Tahini or Sesame Paste: This is the star for its distinctive nutty, slightly earthy flavor. If you’re not a fan of tahini’s unique taste, smooth almond butter or cashew butter makes an excellent substitute.
- Vanilla Extract: Enhances all the other flavors, adding a warm, comforting aroma to your cookies.
- Egg: A single large egg binds all the ingredients together, ensuring the cookies have a cohesive texture.
- Lemon Zest: Provides a bright, fresh citrus note that cuts through the richness of the tahini and blueberries, elevating the overall flavor. You can also use a touch of lemon extract if zest isn’t available.
- Quick Oats: My preferred choice for these cookies as they create a softer, more uniform texture. While rolled oats can also be used, quick oats yield a less chewy result. For a gluten-free option, ensure you use certified gluten-free oats.
- Baking Powder: The leavening agent that helps the cookies rise slightly, giving them a tender crumb.
- Kosher Salt: A pinch of salt is crucial for balancing the sweetness and enhancing all the flavors in the cookies.
- Fresh Blueberries: Bursting with flavor and antioxidants, fresh blueberries are ideal. However, frozen blueberries can be used straight from the freezer; just be mindful that they might release a bit more moisture.
How to Make Blueberry Oatmeal Tahini Cookies
Creating these scrumptious cookies is incredibly straightforward. Follow these simple steps for perfectly baked treats:
Before you begin, make sure to preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. This will prevent sticking and make cleanup a breeze.

Step 1: Mash the Bananas. In a large mixing bowl, take your ripe bananas and mash them thoroughly with a potato masher or a sturdy fork until smooth. A few small lumps are perfectly fine and add a nice texture.

Step 2: Combine Wet Ingredients. To the mashed bananas, add the honey (or maple syrup), tahini, vanilla extract, the beaten egg, and fresh lemon zest. Whisk all these ingredients together until the mixture is well combined and smooth. The tahini might make the mixture a bit thick, which is normal.

Step 3: Add Dry Ingredients. Now, incorporate the quick oats, baking powder, and kosher salt into the wet mixture. Using a spatula, stir gently until everything is just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the cookies tender. Then, carefully fold in your fresh blueberries.

Step 4: Gentle Mix. Use your spatula to gently mix the blueberries into the dough, ensuring they are evenly distributed without crushing them. The dough will be thick but manageable.

Step 5: Form and Place Cookies. Spoon generous dollops of the cookie mixture onto your prepared baking sheet. While these cookies don’t spread much, leave a little space between each one. You can gently shape them with the back of the spoon or your fingers into desired cookie shapes; they will largely hold their form during baking.

Step 6: Bake and Cool. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the centers are set. Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and allow the cookies to cool directly on the baking sheet for at least 10-15 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. This helps them firm up and prevents them from breaking apart.
Tips for Perfecting Your Blueberry Oatmeal Tahini Cookies
- Tahini Substitution: As mentioned, if the distinct flavor of tahini isn’t to your liking, feel free to swap it with an equal amount of your favorite creamy nut butter, such as almond butter or cashew butter. This variation is especially popular with kids who might be less accustomed to tahini.
- Cooling is Key: These cookies are soft when they first come out of the oven. Allowing them to cool on the baking sheet for at least 10-15 minutes is crucial. This cooling period helps them firm up and prevents them from crumbling when you try to move them.
- Berry Swaps: While blueberries are fantastic, feel free to get creative with other berries! Chopped strawberries, raspberries, or even a mix of berries would be delicious. For a different twist, you could also add raisins, chopped dates, or chocolate chips.
- Oat Texture: I recommend quick oats for a softer, more uniform cookie texture. If you prefer a chewier cookie with more bite, rolled oats (old-fashioned oats) can be used. Just ensure they are certified gluten-free if you need a gluten-free option.
- Don’t Overmix: After adding the dry ingredients, mix just until combined. Overmixing can lead to tougher cookies.
- Banana Ripeness: The riper the bananas (with brown spots), the more natural sweetness they provide, reducing the need for additional sugars and enhancing the cookie’s flavor.
Common Questions About Blueberry Oatmeal Tahini Cookies
Absolutely! This recipe is incredibly versatile. You can easily replace the blueberries with other fresh or frozen chopped fruits like strawberries or raspberries. For a different flavor profile, consider adding raisins, dried cranberries, chocolate chips, or even chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans. Each substitution will give the cookies a delightful new twist!
Yes, you can certainly use rolled oats if that’s what you have on hand or prefer. Rolled oats will give your cookies a slightly chewier texture and a more rustic appearance compared to the softer, more uniform texture provided by quick oats. The baking time generally remains the same, but keep an eye on them.
I completely understand if tahini isn’t your preferred flavor – many people, including my own kids, have their favorites! The good news is that tahini can be easily swapped out for any creamy nut butter. Almond butter or cashew butter are fantastic alternatives that will provide a similar consistency and richness while offering a different, equally delicious flavor.
These cookies are best stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days to maintain their freshness and texture. For longer storage, you can absolutely freeze them! Place cooled cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet to flash freeze, then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. They will keep well in the freezer for up to 2 months. Thaw them at room temperature or warm them gently in the microwave for a fresh-baked feel.

Ingredients
- 2 spotted bananas, mashed
- ¼ cup honey, or maple syrup
- 1/2 cup tahini , or sesame paste (see notes for alternatives)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 2 teaspoons lemon zest, or 1 tsp lemon extract
- 2 1/4 cups quick oats
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon fine kosher salt
- ⅔ cup fresh blueberries
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a large sheet pan with parchment paper.
-
In a mixing bowl, mash the 2 spotted bananas with a potato masher or fork until mostly smooth.

-
Stir in the ¼ cup honey, 1/2 cup tahini , 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, 1 large egg, and 2 teaspoons lemon zest. Whisk all the wet ingredients together until well combined and smooth.

-
Add the 2 1/4 cups quick oats, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon fine kosher salt to the bowl. Using a spatula, stir gently until the dry ingredients are just incorporated into the wet mixture.

-
Gently fold in the ⅔ cup fresh blueberries, being careful not to crush them. Mix until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.

-
Spoon rounded dollops of the cookie mixture onto the prepared sheet pan, leaving about an inch between each cookie. You can lightly shape them with your fingers if desired; they will hold their shape well during baking.

-
Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the centers are just set. Allow the cookies to cool completely on the pan for at least 10-15 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. This helps them to firm up properly.

Notes
- Tahini Flavor: Please note that these cookies will have a distinct tahini flavor. If you or your family are not fans of tahini, I highly recommend swapping it with a creamy nut butter like almond butter or cashew butter for a milder taste.
- Oat Type: This recipe works best with quick oats for a softer texture. If you use rolled oats, the cookies will be chewier. For a gluten-free option, ensure you use certified gluten-free oats.
- Blueberry Options: Both fresh and frozen blueberries work beautifully in this recipe. If using frozen, there’s no need to thaw them beforehand.
- Cooling Time: It’s essential to let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for at least 10-15 minutes after baking. This allows them to set and prevents them from falling apart when moved.
- Storage: Store cooled cookies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. They can also be frozen for up to 2 months.
