Essential Ingredients for Your Strawberry Chicken Salad
Crafting this incredible salad requires a few simple yet high-quality ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need to create both the delectable dressing and the vibrant salad:
For the Zesty Dill Mustard Dressing:
- Red Wine Vinegar: Provides a sharp, tangy base for the vinaigrette.
- Dijon Mustard: Adds a pungent, slightly spicy kick and helps emulsify the dressing.
- Maple Syrup: Balances the tang with a touch of natural sweetness. Honey can be used as a substitute.
- Fresh Dill Weed: The star herb, offering a distinct fresh, slightly anisy flavor that pairs wonderfully with chicken and strawberries.
- Garlic Powder: For a subtle savory depth.
- Salt & Freshly Ground Black Pepper: Essential seasonings to enhance all the flavors.
- Olive Oil: The healthy fat that forms the rich base of the dressing.
For the Vibrant Salad:
- Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast: Lean protein, grilled to perfection.
- Kosher Salt & Pepper: To season the chicken generously.
- Romaine Lettuce: Provides a crisp, refreshing crunch. Other greens like mixed greens or spinach work beautifully too.
- Red Onion: Offers a mild, sharp bite and beautiful color. White onion can be used as an alternative.
- Avocado: Adds a creamy texture and healthy fats, balancing the flavors.
- Fresh Strawberries: The hero ingredient, bringing natural sweetness and juiciness. Ensure they are ripe and fresh for the best taste.
- Shaved Parmesan Cheese: A salty, savory garnish that adds an extra layer of flavor. Freshly grated is always recommended.
- Avocado Oil or Olive Oil: For grilling the chicken, chosen for its high smoke point and healthy properties.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Perfect Strawberry Chicken Salad
Follow these simple steps to create a show-stopping strawberry chicken salad that’s as impressive to look at as it is to eat.
1. Prepare the Flavorful Dressing & Marinade:
- In a small bowl, whisk together the red wine vinegar, dijon mustard, maple syrup, fresh dill weed, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and olive oil until thoroughly combined. This mixture will serve as both your chicken marinade and your salad dressing.
- Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dressing until you’re ready to use it.

2. Marinate the Chicken for Maximum Taste:
- Season your boneless, skinless chicken breasts generously with salt and pepper.
- Place the seasoned chicken into a resealable plastic bag or an airtight container. Pour about one-third of your prepared dill mustard dressing over the chicken. Ensure the chicken is well coated.
- Seal the bag or container and refrigerate for at least one hour to allow the flavors to meld. If time permits, marinating overnight will yield even more tender and flavorful chicken. Remember to keep the remaining two-thirds of the dressing in a separate container, untouched by the raw meat, for serving.
3. Prep Your Fresh Salad Components:
- While the chicken is marinating, prepare your vegetables and fruit. Roughly chop the romaine lettuce and slice the red onion.
- Halve, seed, peel, and slice the avocado into bite-sized pieces.
- Wash the fresh strawberries and quarter them.
4. Grill the Juicy Chicken to Perfection:
- Heat a grill or a heavy-bottomed grill pan over medium-high heat. Lightly brush the cooking surface with avocado oil or olive oil to prevent sticking.
- Carefully place the marinated chicken breasts onto the preheated grill. Grill each side until it achieves a beautiful golden-brown color and distinct grill marks appear. This usually takes about 10-12 minutes in total, or until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) using a meat thermometer.
- Once cooked, remove the chicken from the grill and let it rest on a cutting board for 5 minutes. This crucial step allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring moist and tender chicken.
- Slice the rested chicken into 1-inch pieces.
5. Assemble Your Masterpiece:
- In a large salad bowl, combine the chopped romaine lettuce and sliced red onion.
- Add the sliced avocados and quartered strawberries to the bowl.
- Artfully arrange the sliced grilled chicken on top of the vibrant bed of greens, avocados, and strawberries.
6. Serve & Enjoy:
- Just before serving, drizzle the reserved dill mustard dressing generously over the entire salad.
- Garnish with a sprinkle of freshly shaved Parmesan cheese for an extra touch of savory flavor and visual appeal. Serve immediately and savor every fresh bite!

Frequently Asked Questions & Pro Tips
To ensure your strawberry chicken salad is always a resounding success, here are some answers to common questions and helpful tips:
Optimize Your Prep Time:
- Marinate Ahead: For maximum convenience and flavor, marinate your chicken the night before or at least a few hours in advance. This allows the chicken to absorb more of that delicious dill mustard flavor.
- Quick Prep Option: If you’re short on time and can’t marinate for an hour, don’t worry! Season and cook the chicken immediately. While marinating adds flavor and tenderness, the salad will still be delicious. You can also prepare all your chopped salad components while the chicken cooks to streamline the process.
Lettuce & Greens Alternatives:
- While romaine lettuce offers a wonderful crunch, feel free to experiment with other greens you enjoy or have on hand. Options like butter lettuce, spring mixed greens, baby spinach, or even arugula can provide different textures and subtle flavor notes that complement the other ingredients beautifully.
Choosing Your Oil:
- Both avocado oil and olive oil are excellent choices for grilling the chicken and for the dressing. Avocado oil has a higher smoke point, making it ideal for grilling, while extra virgin olive oil offers a distinct flavor for the dressing. Choose whichever you prefer or have available.
The Importance of Fresh Strawberries:
- For the best taste and texture, always use fresh, ripe strawberries. Frozen strawberries, while convenient for smoothies, tend to become watery when thawed and won’t offer the same crisp sweetness that makes this salad so special.
Elevate with Freshly Grated Parmesan:
- If possible, grate your own Parmesan cheese directly from a block. Pre-shredded Parmesan often contains anti-caking agents that can affect its texture and flavor. Freshly grated Parmesan melts more beautifully and has a richer, more authentic taste that truly enhances the salad.
What Pairs Well with Chicken Salad?
This strawberry chicken salad is a complete meal on its own, but it also pairs wonderfully with a variety of sides. For a light accompaniment, consider serving it with toasted bread, crunchy crackers, or a handful of your favorite chips. If you’re looking for something more substantial to make it an even heartier meal, grilled vegetables like asparagus or zucchini, or a comforting bowl of your favorite soup, would be excellent choices.
Is Grilled Chicken Salad Truly Healthy?
Absolutely! Grilled chicken breast is an exceptional source of lean protein, essential for muscle building and satiety. When combined with a colorful array of vegetables and fruits in a salad, it transforms into a complete, healthy, and highly nutritious meal. The lettuce, strawberries, and avocado provide a wealth of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and healthy fats, all contributing to your overall well-being. This salad is a fantastic example of a balanced meal that nourishes your body.
Storing Your Strawberry Chicken Salad:
To keep your leftover strawberry chicken salad fresh, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For optimal freshness and to prevent the lettuce from wilting, it’s best to store the chicken, dressing, and salad components separately, if possible. Drizzle the dressing over individual servings just before eating. To prevent the avocado slices from oxidizing and turning brown, consider adding them to your salad just before serving, rather than storing them with the leftovers.

Creative Variations for Your Chicken Salad
While this Strawberry Chicken Salad recipe is perfect as is, it also serves as a fantastic base for customization. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different ingredients to suit your taste and dietary needs:
Protein Swaps:
- Turkey: Leftover roasted turkey or sliced turkey breast can be a delicious substitute for chicken.
- Chickpeas: For a delightful vegetarian or vegan option, roasted chickpeas can add a satisfying texture and protein punch.
- Shrimp: Grilled or sautéed shrimp would make a wonderful seafood variation.
Vegetable Additions:
- Cucumber: Adds a refreshing, cool crunch.
- Bell Peppers: Sliced red or yellow bell peppers bring sweetness and vibrant color.
- Corn: Fresh or frozen (thawed) corn kernels add a touch of sweetness and texture.
- Red Cabbage: Finely shredded red cabbage can add an extra layer of crunch and beautiful color.
Nutty Crunch:
- Sprinkle in some toasted pecans, walnuts, or sliced almonds for added texture and healthy fats.
Cheese Alternatives:
- If Parmesan isn’t your preference, try crumbled feta cheese for a salty, tangy kick, or creamy goat cheese for a softer, more delicate flavor.
Dressing Remixes:
- While the dill mustard dressing is phenomenal, you could also try a balsamic vinaigrette, a honey-lime dressing, or a creamy poppy seed dressing for different flavor profiles.
